| Principles of Acupuncture |

Each individual has their own body energy, life force or ‘Qi’ and within acupuncture these are
called meridians which are stimulated at specific points along their pathways. Stimulating these
specific points has been shown to successfully create different physiological responses within the
body.
Acupuncture is the insertion of small sterile needles into the skin at specific points to produce physiological changes within the body. Historically, over many thousands of years, it was discovered that by piercing the skin to cure disease was in fact beneficial to the patient. |

Following an acupuncture treatment, the patient can begin to feel more energetic through the release of endorphins, which can lower the heart rate and blood pressure, and can increase tissue regeneration, and can also give that person energy, improve their self–confidence and give them an overall feeling of well–being. Occasionally during treatments, it has been found that acupuncture alone is not sufficient enough to create the desired result. One of the most common ways acupuncture can be enhanced is moxabustion. This is a stick of compressed plant extract which is slowly burned and gives off considerable localised heat (smokeless) when held closely over the top of the inserted needle which in turn accentuates the therapy. Complications and Side Effects Acupuncture is generally very safe and serious side effects are very rare. Sterile, single use disposable needles are used every time.
